As part of WSKG’s biweekly series, Community Conversation, producer Crystal Sarakas moderated a series of discussions at Ithaca College on the proposed drilling in New York and what impact that could hold for the region.

The Marcellus Shale Resource Center, provided by WSKG Public Broadcasting, offered a number of on-line resources related to natural gas extraction. WSKG created several podcasts about the process of hydraulic fracturing, its impact on the environment, and the DEC’s public hearings in New York State. WSKG-FM offered a half-hour long Spectrum Radio program titled “Sustainable Design for the Future” which discussed sustainable planning with engineers and planners

State Sen. Lea Webb speaks at a rally to expand New York’s fracking ban on March 5. Webb and other lawmakers have proposed legislation that would prohibit using carbon dioxide to extract gas and oil.

Nearly a decade after New York passed its controversial fracking ban, the debate over resource extraction in the state has returned.

Gathered at the state Capitol earlier this month, a group of elected officials, environmentalists, and anti-fracking advocates repeated a chant many knew well. Calls to “Ban fracking now!” rang out, with state Sen. Lea Webb leading the crowd.

Webb, like many of the others who had gathered to rally against a new gas and oil extraction proposal in the state, has made this demand before. Yet, many believed that fight was long over — New York banned hydraulic fracking in 2014. Since then, as oil and gas companies began fracking in neighboring Pennsylvania and other states, shale formations in the Empire State have remained untouched.

PBS NewsHour has a page on Hydraulic Fracturing. However, this “tag” page has not been updated since 2016! Perhaps a harbinger of what lies ahead in Trump’s second Presidency. PBS, CPB, and NPR are related.
