Why These Videos Are Here
The personal art videos now appearing here are part of that expansion. They are not separate from the fracking archive. They ask how environmental history is felt in daily life — through weather, attention, sound, movement, grief, repair, and the slow act of looking.
Every sunset which I witness inspires me with the desire to go to a West as distant and as fair as that into which the sun goes down. He appears to migrate westward daily, and tempt us to follow him. He is the Great Western Pioneer whom the nations follow. We dream all night of those mountain-ridges in the horizon, though they may be of vapor only, which were last gilded by his rays. The island of Atlantis, and the islands and gardens of the Hesperides, a sort of terrestrial paradise, appear to have been the Great West of the ancients, enveloped in mystery and poetry. Who has not seen in imagination, when looking into the sunset sky, the gardens of the Hesperides, and the foundation of all those fables?

This Palau Edition supports the next phase of Earthstage: continuous video loops designed for informal home-based multi-channel installations. Viewers will be able to play different Earthstage videos on adjacent screens — phones, tablets, desktops, or monitors — creating quiet, looping environments for listening and reflection.

History: Seventies and Eighties
In 1976, Act Requiring Maintenance, a mult-channel video installation featuring a live lizard and running water was presented at the Everson Museum in Syracuse.
In the 1980’s, single-channel videotapes, Boundary, Orbit, and Time Witness were exhibited internationally. Video Overlook Studios produced video programs for the Brooklyn Museum, Intar Theater, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the International Sintesismo of Arts among others.
History: Nineties to the present
In the 1990’s, after producing the autobiographical video work, Ephemeris, Neil returned to the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company after having helped start-up the American Dance Asylum as their filmmaker-in-residence in Binghamton in 1975-1976.
Video Overlook produced the arts in education documentary and database, Better Day, for Arts Connection in 1996-1997.
Coded in Shockwave, two internet art interactive cinema projects, pulse.time and mouse.dance were commissioned and presented by Turbulence in 1997 and 1998. WNET Channel 13 in New York City featured mouse.dance in a special TV presentation. These works and other online Turbulence works have recently been added to the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art at Cornell University.
As a production consultant for Enliven, a business unit of internet pioneer, Excite@Home, I produced rich-media internet ads with the creative departments of Ogilvy Interactive, Zentropy Partners and TBWA/Chiat/Day among others. These animated pieces were then displayed to millions of web users.
Curator of Exhibitions
In 1983, at CCNY’s Leonard Davis Center for the Arts, The First Annual Artist and Computer show began and ran for nine years in different venues, ending with the Threadwaxing Interactive Show, co-produced with Harvestworks in 1992. The Artist and Computer Show was inspired by the large-scale pop-up shows organized by the group Collaborative Projects. The Artist and Computer shows presented artists’ works that explored improvised relationships between the artist, computers and the audience.
Education
I earned a Master’s of Arts in Humanities in Media Study in 1991 and a Master’s of Science degree in Library and Information Science from the University at Buffalo in 2007. In 2005, partnering with software vendor Imaginova on a special kiosk edition of Starry Night, he and Stiller Zusman produced a wild ride through an accurate database of the universe for young explorers. This ran for 10 years at the Ithaca Sciencenter as part of their permanent Mars and Stars exhibit.
Mixplex LLC was formed in 2014 and has produced work and provided production consultancy and practical expertise in video prodcution, web and archive design for numerous clients. I am a full stack developer and have raised children and pets in Ithaca, NY since 2000.
